<VV> oil filters

I think the other element- excuse the pun- that is oft overlooked when one indicates that they've "had no complaints" with a particular oil filter, or oil, for that matter, is that engine wear does not make itself immediately evident, but rather occurs over many miles.  The could be accelerated without noticing.

This became very clear to me in reading that great 32 page article about oil.  For instance, one could be running X - 50 oil in an engine designed for thinner oil, such as the Corvair, and not realize that their engine is wearing faster than it otherwise would, until (if) the oil heats to a temperature that is well above normal operating temperature.

I made up a display in the Western Auto Store in Charlotte where I was a Manager.

I used 3 filters on my 87 Grand Marquis (5.0)  The Motorcraft, the Fram and the K&N performance filter.  I ran each 3000 miles, then let them drain out and cut the metal off at the sealing lip with a cut-off tool.

The K&N looked best. Trapped dirt, and the filter element still was in good shape.

Motorcraft was 2nd---did well, but the filter element didn't hold up very well.

Fram---looked like a roll of toilet paper immersed in oil.

When the Fram filters with the PTFE additive in the filter came out, after talking to a Wix rep at the Charlotte Autofair, I
cut open a new one.  There was a small square of cardboard on top of the filter paper.    The Wix guys told me they sprayed PTFE on the cardboard and put it into the filter housing.  And charged about 5.00 more for it.

End of the day---My opinion only ----When you buy a Fram, you're paying for the name, not the quality of the filter.  Air filters---If the price is right.  Oil Filters, NEVER.

 experience with Fram is positive.
