<VV> Rough idle and dying in drive (solved, sort of)

I pulled the crossover tube and checked it with the MityVac.
Negative. I pulled and checked the vacuum advance tube and choke
control tube. Negative. I checked the tube to the modulator on the
PG. Negative. I checked the torque on the hold-down nuts on the
carb. The one to the head was fine, the one on the top of the carb
took about 1/32 of a turn. I set both at 11 ft. lbs. I checked the
air horn screws and they were a little loose taking about 1/64 of a
turn each. I was careful not to over tighten anything. I then
started the car and it was still running a little rough, but better.
I stopped the car and sprayed carb cleaner into the idle circuit. I
started it and it ran a little better. I then adjusted the advance
from the 24 BTDC that it had been set at and changed it to 18 BTDC.
It started to run better. I then adjusted the carbs using the Unisyn
( I had actually done this before all this started and it was running
fine). It ran better still. I then adjusted the idle screws until it
was at the optimum that I could get. It starts and idles, although I
can tell that it is high. When I put it in drive, it runs fairly
well, but not as smoothly as I would like. The problem seems to be
solved, at least at this rpm. I'm afraid that if I reduce the rpm,
the stalling may begin again. I haven't been able to road test it
and that will have to wait until tomorrow at the earliest. I will
let everyone know how it goes.

Thanks for your advise.

OH, BTW for those of you on Corvair Center - I know you were
scratching your heads over the post title (Rough idle in drive) -
tired and in a hurry.

Stephen
