Another case where RTFM would help.

those that say RTFM. ggg

All light switches from the mid 30s to the mid 80s come off the same 
way, with the knob staying on the shaft, and the shaft comes out of the 
switch by pushing on a retaining button on the switch body. Of course I 
exaggerated, not ALL switches are like this. Many foreign cars used 
different approaches.... Now everyone seems to turn, push, or automatic 
to get lights on.

I hope you are able to get the knob to remain on the shaft after this. 
The main difference in a wiper and light knob is the wiper knob never 
sees force to pull it off the shaft in normal use. The light switch 
always sees pulling force in operation of the switch to the ON position. 
So its knob needs to not come off by pulling.
