Arend:  thank you.  I appreciate your advice.  I'll check the carb.  It's amazing how well the Corvair engine is balanced, even when things aren't perfect, the motor runs so nice and smooth...Billl

A had some similar problem with my car; rough idle and so on. It seemed that one carb was completely loose and didn’t work in idle stage.
Once I tightened the nuts everything was in order again. So when it idles rough, there’s a chance that the engine runs on 3 cylinders only.
Strangely enough it runs quiet even. Check it by taking of the spark plug cables on the side where the idle mixture screw doesn’t work. If it stays the same way, that side doesn’t work at all.
If you throttle it the cylinders start working again. (but only with the cables attached…)
