<VV> Dampers vs Dampeners?

There's a lot of companies advertising dampeners on the internet to reduce vibration, so either they are also all wrong or the word dampeners and dampers can be used interchangeably.  How about let's correct IBM's TV ad where they say "data is collected"?  Shouldn't they say "data are collected"?

If they are only there to absorb vibration (or damp it), then they are not dampeners but DAMPERS.

Sorry, that's one of my pet peeve terminology issues.
