Certainly , the blame was GM'S ,
ALL the information I have read says , the GM higherarchy had detectives following Nader around , hoping to get some dirt to slander him with..... HOW STUPID IS THIS !!!! All they had to do [GM publicists] is call a press conference with several ranking GM engineers to answer questions. Close the affair by saying ,"Mr. Nader might be a briliant lawyer , and a competent author, but should leave car design to people who do it for a living". I'LL bet that would have ended the controversy then and there.....

Nader admitted that he was a young attorney trying to make a name for himself. It was unfortunate but NOT a coincidence that the very first chapter was dedicated to the Corvair. Nader's facts were flawed based on a pre-production memo of the swing axle. The swing axle that was produced featured a "swivel bearing" at the wheel end of the axle. So although there was still tow in it was limited by the length of the extended shock and/or the optional strap.
Anyone who has seen the videos of the engineers trying to roll a Corvair should have been sufficient evidence to disprove Nader's claim.
I attribute the cause most if not ALL of the accidents to poor maintenance (incorrect/low tire pressure) or a loose nut behind the wheel (driving unsafe for conditions.)
In the end, anyone who still remembers Nader's book thinks it was all about the Corvair. Nader still gets waaayyy too much credit for the Corvair's demise. It was GM's fault.
The irony of all of this is that we should THANK NADER for causing GM to continue the Corvair until 1969 instead of pulling the plug in 1966. THANKS RALPHIE!!!

Although I have, on occasion moved the copies of "Unsafe @" from the Auto
section in my local libraries to the Fiction section, under N for Nader, I
really don't see it as fiction. It is more propaganda. That would be full of
intended lies, not fanciful fiction. It was published with a definite
purpose in mind. Not really intending the Corvair as a target, Nader was aiming
at the Auto industry as a whole, trying to get it to reform it's methods
of dealing with safety both in car design and sales. Well, as we have seen
since 1965, car design has certainly been affected. For better or worse,
cars are now much safer to be in during an accident.

Sales? Not so much! See the latest Corvette TV commercial: "Nice to know,
America still builds Rockets!"

Novel. Very apt Bob. "Unsafe and Any Speed" certainly was fiction.
