<VV> "Clunk" when shifting into gear

If there is a clunk.  Check the u-joints.  If there is a 'bump' when  
shifting into gear, check the hose that goes to the modulator valve (I  
believe that's the correct name for it.) If there is a hole or it's  
disconnected or cracked, shifts will be hard.
