<VV> Ignition tester

On a Corvair I would have pulled one wire out of the distributor cap and plugged in the wire with the spark plug type tip and I would connect the clamp end wire to the spark plug wire ... I would then know the KV required to fire that plug ... Repeating on the remaining 5 cylinders would give me a voltage requirement pattern for the engine. Odd one in the bunch? Start looking for the reason.

Found an "Ignition Tester" at a fleamarket sometime ago but, never tried to
use it till yesterday. It has 2 wires, one with a terminal like an spark plug tip and the
other one with a clamp (see attached picture). Having no instructions, I connected first
wire to an spark plug wire and, the second to ground. Started engine and it showed 8
KVolts at idle with an increase up to 12 KVolts at revving engine. Showed the same at all
6 wires. Ignition system is a Pertronix I with matched coil and Seth's wires.

Concerns: Did I use it the right way ?, Are those voltages right ?

   Thanks
