<VV> 3 on Tree -No Vair

Glad they didn't use that linkage on the Corvair. . . .

I was a little small to help him, I was only 12 when we sold the ChevyII and
bought a used 62 Corvair 700 coupe. Yes, they allowed me to start it and
warm it up at 12 but I couldn't drive it anywhere.

We bought the Corvair off my Uncle. He bought it new for his wife, I have
the original bill of sale. The Corvair was pretty good when it was newer,
but after that kid attacked it one Halloween night, it never was quite the
same. (We didn't have a garage at that house, just a carport.) We think he
messed up the vacuum modulator in the Powerglide and loosened the bolts on
the bottom of the oil pan. Didn't pull the oil pan off, just loosened the
bolts. One was found half a turn from falling off when the mechanic found
the problem. Just because he got his license pulled for his 3d moving
violation in a year. (He wrapped the passenger seat of a 55 Chevy Nomad
around a pole one fine summer evening one house down from ours and we were
out talking to the neighbors.) Waste of a perfectly good Chevy product that
was. He did repair it, he tried running me over with it 2 years later when
I was going to high school.

You just needed to see what he pushed. He moved the 1-R shift linkage to
the neutral position.

I have lots of practice doing this for myself and other people back then.

The linkage could stick in any gear. Don't know which linkage is stuck?
Just jiggle both linkages and the sloppy one in in neutral, make the
other one line up with that one. Simple. Make sure the hand brake is set
or someone is still in the driver's seat.

I have also adjusted the bottom bearing in the column to take up the
slack that causes this problem. On one Plymouth I took the column out
and re drilled the bearing holes to get it tighter than designed. They
work slick then....

No wonder JC Whitless sold so many floor shifter kits. Let's throw in
new parts instead of fixing the old. Especially since the new parts look
cool. BTW, the floor shifter kits also wore out and did the same thing.
