I have used both 1 and 2, they both worked quite well.  The two major  
advantages to the conversions to my mind are getting rid of points and  
distributor wear, basically the system becomes like a new car.  Plugs  
seem to last longer too because the consistent spark helps keep them  
from loading in the first place.  Don't expect any real improvement in  
performance over a proper set of points, but I find the cars start  
much more easily and consistently and idle better over extended  
periods.  Of course without points wear the top end is more consistent  
as well.
