I live in a railroad town, got a friend who works in the NS service 
shops here.    He has an ammeter that goes up to 250 amps.   They 
check shunts on diesel electric locomotives with them.

I hung it on the battery's positive lead of the Corsa ragtop and 
cranked the engine with the coil wire off, just for grins.    The 
engine required 58 amps of cranking current.    Compared to most 
cars, that ain't much.
