 I would hazard a guess that anyone one can do to stiffen the crankcase (plenty flexible on a Corvair) will reduce crank flex and make this common crank failure less common! ARP stud kit, top and bottom plates, etc... But that's me...

Finally got into the engine and see what I found.

Notice the large hole milled out by Uncle Chevy to balance the crank.  There is 
an even larger hole on the other end.  Those holes are large enough to put your 
index finger in.

This engine still ran after the break.
