On what planet has ANY owner's manual recommended NOT putting the
manual transmission in a low gear (typically first or reverse) when
parking?

Most three on the tree, and some floor four speeds, were made so one HAD
to put the transmission in reverse to remove the key.

It got worse. The thing that still pisses me off about my 2005 Corvette -
remedied, supposedly in later models. You have to put the car into Reverse
(6-speed stick) to open the door and get out. Or to let someone else out.
So you cannot leave the car running and get out. (There are manual levers
down on the floor to release the door in an emergency.) I have gotten used to
it over the years, but I still don't like it!
