So the DMV removes the front crossmember to see the VIN on a Corvair? Or do
they just check the visable plate?

I'm sure the screwed on plate on the "61 covertible" would raise eyebrows!

Just a friendly reminder.  Almost every state has a re-title rule now for 
cars purchased out of state.  NC passed theirs last year.

If you purchase a car from another state, it must be inspected before being 
titled that the secret VIN matches the title you have.  The days of 
replacing a VIN tag and a title from a junked vair are OVER.  Unless of 
course, the car didn't come from out of state and you NEVER sell it to 
someone out of state.  But they'll find a way around that too eventually.
