Guys, guys, guys, there was no melting. There is a witness mark plain
to see in the photo that shows the part broke and banged up against
the top of the ring land for some time wearing and pounding the piston
so it expanded slightly and caused the wear mark on the side of the
piston, then left out the bottom through the opening made for the
piston pin boss, when the chunk came completely loose. It probably got
banged around and pulverised in about .5 seconds by the rotating mass
of the crank and rods, and it was done.
