However - Once the cap climbs up the rod bolts a bit, you should slide the  
rod back up tight against the crank throw and slide/wiggle the loose cap  
off - with the bearing shell. AT that point, you need another tool! Most 
"Real"  auto parts stores have these little booties - Actually tiny rubber 
condom-shaped  boots that slide down on the rod threads to protect the crankshaft 
surface as  you slip the rod off the crank. In a pinch, you can use the 
proper size  rubber tubing, but wall thickness may be a problem. These will be 
used again  during rod/bearing installation, so keep them handy.
