Assuming you have verified the new cable is correctly installed around the
pullies, there is a device you can buy at hardware stores that will shorten
a cable.  Basically it puts an "S" curve in the cable.  As I recall there
are plenty of threads for adjustment on the clutch rod unless you have the
wrong throwout bearing or pivot ball on the fork.
