Stephen,

My one Corvair with an electric fuel pump has the pump mounted behind the
rear seat, opposite the heater unit. I have run that set up for about 10
years and the accompanying conditions over that time. I've also run the tank
"dry" on purpose with the pump. Even though I live in Kansas, I've driven
the car all over this beautiful and sometimes hilly country. Anyhow, the
purpose of my story is that I've never encountered a fuel pump related problem.

If you need more evidence, nearly every front engine aftermarket
installation of an electric fuel is at the opposite end of the vehicle from the gas
tank. The reason modern cars have the fuel pump located in the gas tank is
simplicity and cost. The sender and fuel pump are now one assembly.

If the fuel line, rubber and/or metal, between the pump and the tank are
good the pump will work as advertised. After all as far as the fuel is
concerned the electric pump operates just like the mechanical pump.

I kept trying to figure out why my pump kept pumping but stopped
feeding gas to the carbs yesterday after running well at highway
speeds for over 50 miles. Was just corresponding with a forum member
when I had a lightbulb moment. When I parked the car, the tank was
facing downhill and only had about a 1/5 of a tank left. Perhaps the
feeder line from the tank was exposed to air in the tank and the pump
sucked up the air into the gas line... thoughts? I usually don't let
it get below 1/2 full, but since I'm trying to drain it, I let it get
low this time.

Perhaps two or three more weeks before I have the time to move the
pump to the front although if this was the cause of the malfunction,
having it in front wouldn't have made a difference.
