Charles, Congratulations! You found the problem. Now how to fix it. If it was me AND I was on a limited budget (I am) AND I just wanted it to go fairly short trips and not across country, I might try to come up with a "good used" piston/cylinder/rod assembly.I might start with checking what piston size you have (is is standard or has it been bored oversized)? If you want to be able to really rely on this vehicle, then by all means overhaul the engine. Overhauls take (way) more time and money whereas a used piston could be replaced pretty quickly.
