Always used long guide pins during installation, NOW I can the for removal too!!

Pulling the engine seperately is not a big problem, it is my standard proceedure 
for LM Corvairs.  What you didn't know was to be careful of the throwout bearing 
snout.  One precaution I take is to use three guide pins (bolts with the heads 
cut off) to guide the engine straight back from the differential until 
everything is clear.  That is a good tip about putting it in gear to get the 
input shaft to stay in the transaxle.  Have fun and enjoy your new find.
