Lots of people say this, and they are correct -- for late 
models.  Late models are specifically designed and engineered for 
engine-only R&R.  Yes, one still has to be careful about the throwout 
bearing sleeve, but removing the engine, only, is a Chevy-approved 
procedure on late models.

Early models and FCs, on the other hand, were intended for complete 
drivetrain R&R, only.
