applying 12 volts to the purple wire that's part of a two-wire connector at  the 
front portion of the engine compartment on the driver's side. Is it the  
purple wire..." 
 
Yes, that's the wire. Remember, however, the engine can start when  
applying 12-volts to the purple wire: when the starter solenoid engages, a full  12 
volts is fed through the auxiliary contacts in the solenoid to the positive 
 connection on the coil. This is the function which occurs when one turns 
the  ignition to "start"; full voltage is provided, while cranking, to 
improve  starting characteristics. Upon releasing the key, normal, ballasted 
voltage  is fed to the coil. The purple wire feature also makes it rather easy  
to steal a Corvair.
