  But it's NOT the value of M plus half the value of R.  Rather it's equal to half of the SUM of M and R which is written as (M+R)/2.  Consider it as the AVERAGE of M and R.  There are 2 ways of measuring the octane of gasoline.  One is the Motor method and the other is the Research method.  The octane number posted on the gas pump is simply the average of the 2 numbers.
