My default all purpose tire is the BFG Radial T/A.  Predictable, decent ride, reasonably priced, and available in a wide variety of sizes.  Depending on the wheels you should be able to get a 205/60-15 under a stock late model, they are very close in size to the later '66 spec 7.00-13 and will ride just a little better than a 205/55.
