i have a large jar of vaseline on the bench for such uses ,on gaskets and  
auto transmission work..holding bearings in std shift stuff. it also is good 
 (very small amounts!) on about any bolt you are assembling for smooth 
going  together.
 about the same as chap stick.
i also have one of those liquid hand soap dispensers  with assembly  fluid 
in it for easier semi mess free applications .
