At this point it is all a cost question.  Get a written price to  repair 
it, make a written claim and just be businesslike, but very  persistent, and 
get what you can.  They know something happened and they  have some leeway to 
give you something to close the case.  As others  have said--you didn't tow 
it backward with an unlatched lid and the prior owner  didn't tow it 
anywhere.  I doubt you'll get everything you want, but  you should get something.  
Phone calls alone just won't do it.
