It is quite probable you did not get the ball at the end of the shifter
cable properly engaged with its mate inside the tranny. I've gotten lucky
few times with the twist and insert method, but the foolproof way to ensure
you get it right is to drain the tranny fluid, pull the pan, and you'll see
how the ball fits. Good luck and don't tighten the pan bolts too much when
reinstalling.
