Now you're telling me I wasn't supposed to pull oil filler tube and replace
it with a freeze plug???

Correct.  (Kinda.  In GM-speak it was a "Delcotron Generator.")

The former -- a unique-to-1965 Greenbriers part.

However, unless you are seeking pure stock status, using a 
conventional LM car part on an FC engine with an alternator not only 
works just fine, but it also gives you the car-like oil fill tube, 
very handy when doing oil changes.
