Ray, keeping your engine properly tuned is important.
I would say a Pertronix II with a higher capacity coil will give you
more firepower in the cylinder and hence a better fuel burn.
Less restrictive air cleaners.
A 5W30 oil, preferably full synthetic (both will help)
and lastly, on the cheap end, keep your tires inflated properly.

On the more expensive end, I've heard a good EFI conversion can bring
better mileage. A tuned port injection system I know of gets close to
30 on the highway.
