coils come in both 8V and 12V versions (stock is a 8V).  For  a stock coil 
installation, it's really better to run another wire for the  Ignitor to get 
12V, but most people find they work 'ok' with  8V.

One further note, the "power-in" wire for the Pertronix Ignitor is  
connected to the coil stud for convenience. It could easily be removed and fed  its 
own 12 volt - ignition switch power. You still need the resistance-reduced  
power wire to the coil though.
