Hi!

Did you know the first Corvair Valve Cover Race Track was built by a member of the West Florida Corvair Club? Yes! After reading about valve cover races being run by clubs other than Corvair Clubs, Ed Lindsay built the first Corvair Valve Cover Race Track. The first Corvair Valve Cover Race was held at one of the early Corvair Lovers Holiday's sponsored by the West Florida Corvair Club and held in February of each year on Navarre Beach, FL at the Holiday Inn in their Holidome. The first race was held several years before the Holiday Inn on Navarre Beach was torn down because of being battered by so many hurricanes. One member used a remote control car during the first race and prompted the establishment of the first Valve Cover Race Rules. The rules said no remote control devices and had a 5# limit. The release mechanism was high enough so that you did not need to worry about whether it ended up in front of the nose of the valve cover or at the front wheels that some felt was an unfair advantage. The track was made of wood and not divided. The club members loved it when the valve cover racers would crash and burn. Valve Covers were made sturdy and heavy to withstand the crash and burn effect. To this day the West Florida Covair Club uses the original rules that they established in the beginning and do not recognize any other rules.

Ed with the help of Gary Mierzwa and Mark Kerr, has just finished a new 32' valve cover track for the 26th Annual Corvair Lovers Holiday coming up next week end at the Days Inn on Pensacola Beach, FL The rules will be the original rules, not those created by other clubs after the fact. The West Florida Corvair Club is also considering donating the original Corvair Valve Cover Race Track to the Corvair Preservation Foundation.
