To follow up on what Seth and John Roberts said, if you aren't happy with  
your LM shifting check the rubber bushings (just shock bushings really) on 
the  end of the rod of the shift tube bracket that ties the tube to the the 
trans  crossmember.  If they are dried out, rotten or gone then replacing  
them is the first place to start before you start doing other work on the 
shift  mechanism.  You may also find that the end that is brazed to the thin 
metal  shift tube is broken off.  The LM's have a very positive shift feel if  
everything is fitted properly.  Start with the shift tube bracket and work  
your way back until things are the way they should be.
 
And if you have a 66 manual trans and you don't like the slightly higher  
shift forces of the heavier duty transmission you can always do what 
Chevrolet  did and put a bigger shifter ball like the last models had to better 
handle  your brawny grip. :)
