Maybe the question should be  " Why not prime them, what does it hurt ?"

Looking at how lifters work, and what's expected of them, it probably 
doesn't make much difference. I did mine so I didn't have to wait 
forever to get the air out so I could adjust the valves.

Never primed the ones I rebuilt an never had any problems related to 
lifters and
I'm going back many years.  ken
