Byron, take a look at the schematic and find switchable power, meaning
power for when the switch is in the "start" and in the "on" position.
Check that wire at the firewall connector for 12 volts in the on
position. If good, splice in, if not, check the other side of the
connector, the car side. You may just have a problem there at the
connector.  In any event, you want switchable power. Does your car
have a resister in the coil circuit? My 62 had a resister wire in the
harness that burnt out on me, luckliy I got to coast into my driveway
as it gave out after a 250 mile trip!
