Supposedly a 1 speed automatic with torque converter was used successfully thru much of 1964. 
Late in 64 a 2 speed auto was installed, and that configuration was used for a few years until they started using big block engines. 


Since all those FTDs could not have been a result of the automatic transmission, perhaps the heavy fiberglass chassis played a role.
