I thought about this. Of course, in 4th gear the power stays in the main sh
aft area. In the first three gears, the power travels to the cluster gear
and back again. It seems to me that the transfer of power to the cluster,
all of which goes from the input gear on the end of the long input shaft to
the front-most gear on the cluster, would cause side loading of the bearing
on the input gear. There would be no (or very little) side loading in
fourth gear. That seems like a theoretical answer to back up Dennis' experience.
