I assume you mean the starter just goes wrrrr, verses just clicking.
This is due to a bad Bendix. Common problem.
Either replace the whole starter, or replace the Bendix (starter drive).

Clicking (usually) is a bad disc in the solenoid.

Subject: <VV> Issues with Hi Torque Starter

When I purchased my 68 140 convertible in 2004, it came with one of the
Hi Torque starters (sold by Clark's and Corvair Underground). I've had
no issues with it until recently. The initial engagement of the solenoid
became sporadic over the summer. It did not matter if it was when I used
the ignition switch, or an external starter button. I would often have
to energize it a number of times before the solenoid would engage and
the starter would start to turn. This past weekend, it stop energizing
completely. Fortunately, the car was in the garage and I left it there.
I've not done any analysis at this point, except that it occurs when I
use either the ignition switch or an external starter button.

Does anyone have any experience with these starters? Do you know how to
get parts for them, or are they simply remove and replace units when
they start to have problems?

thanks in advance.
