<VV> gas gauge woes

the gas gauge on my 63 spyder is not working-it was- it was getting near empty i thought  but did not take many gallons to fill up. the gauge shows "empty" disconnecting the gauge at the tank makes the needle go above full. when key is off, needle registers just below 1/2. connection to gauge looks and feels good. suggestions? i suspect tank sending unit, but so suddenly? i say suddenly because at last filll up, tank measured full. thanks, jim delucca
