i use a product called "FLUID FILM" to protect parts from rust when stor
ing. my cams from motors are on a board with holes bored with forstner bits
(flat bottom) to fit the lifters next to the lobe they rode with. i spray
them , then a wrap of saran wrap. same with crank shafts. i don't keep a
lot of stuff here anymore , but this has worked for a long time . fluid
film is a spray can of cosmoline, one of the best rust preventing coatings
out there. it washes off in a parts washer or with kerosene . i suppose you
could just wipe it off with a rag. it would also be good to spray in bad
areas of the car body's , or anything metal. i have it on all the problem areas
on my modern cars , on brake , fuel , and power steering lines.
you could make a paste of thinned grease and put it on with a brush. the
spray can is kind of pricy. i think blaster makes a version now also.
