Not just GM cars, I believe the Fed mandated backup lights for 1966, along with lap belts front and rear, padded dash, etc.

My very first car, a stripped 1966 Rambler American 220 wagon, had backup lights and not much else.

Funny how I'm driving a car of the same year, 40 years later.  Then it was an old clunker, now it's a collectible antique...Bill Hershkowitz 66 Monza Sport Sedan 110 PG A/C
