<VV> steering wheel color change

Hello all,

A while back I inquired about refinishing a steering wheel... I had
assumed that I needed something more durable than standard paint to stand up
to the wear a steering wheel is subject to. After a couple of replies I
just painted the wheel.... that car isn't finished yet so I haven't had the
opportunity to see how well it stands up. That wheel was black, and
refinished to black.

Now I have a bigger problem. I am doing an interior color change from
red to blue on my 62 coupe, which is one of the worst combo's. Since there
isn't all that much painted surface in the interior I'm not too worried
about most of it but I'm very concerned about the steering wheel. I figure
unless I can somehow strip all the red off before I start (suggestions?) I'm
sure to have problems.

So unless someone can tell me how to strip the red off and prep the
wheel for it's blue paint I'm going to have to located a blue steering wheel
(standard type with horn ring for a 62). I would need only the wheel, not
the horn ring or center cap etc. Also if anyone has any suggestions on how
to make the paint on the steering wheel more durable when I do paint it I'd
appreciate that. It'll probably be a month or more before I'm ready to
spray the interior surfaces including the wheel.

as always, many thanks!
