Right, My '69 Nova at about 98,000 would detonate on good old Sunoco 260. Pulled 
heads, carbon at least 1/4" thick in corners of the combustion chamber. Carbon 
stayed HOT and did increase compression!

Carbon deposits in the combustion chamber will cause detonation.
