I would also check the balance tube at the carb base... those compression fittings work great!

A lean condition will cause that. Check the accelerator pump, and if that's OK, 
check deeper in that carb for blocked passageways. Although most of Grant's work 
is very good, I've seen some bad ones from him. One noted Corvair expert said 
that he went through 40 carbs to get one perfect pair, so you may have gotten 
one of the other 38...
