I took another look at the car this morning and decided to re-install the old mechanical points-type regulator and then adjust the voltage down from 17.5 to 14.5 range and see what it would do.The pulsing in the lights immediately went away for good. Ok. So I went to Advance Auto Parts (free plug for them here since the kid running the parts counter went out of his way to make it a good transaction) and purchased another solid-state voltage regulator. It is a BWD R281Z and with it installed - same results, voltage is stable with the alternator loaded and unloaded going down the road at about 14.2-14.5 volts and no pulsating out of the lights. If I load up the alternator with everything on; high beams, wipers, blower, turn signal, brake lights- the voltage does drop considerably at idle and in gear but the warning light doesn't come on. I don't know if this means the alternator is weak but I suspect it is just the way it is.So....unless something in the electrical system causes this regulator to screw up I will consider it a good fix. The original solid state regulator came from a very reliable parts source but they can't control the manufacturer- I don't fault them if it was defective off the shelf. Or maybe my car/alternator/system just doesn't work well with their brand? If it does fry it, I am going with a new alternator and regulator. And I'm carrying a flashlight with me in the car. : )Jim
