I've got a useless 5 speed manual in my '03 Silverado; And to get it in
reverse, I shift to 5th gear, then to reverse, and it goes right in.

Subject: <VV> clutch question

I got my 700 out of storage and it drives just fine, all forward gears
engage with out grinding. But when I go to shift in to reverse its hard to
engage without grinding. Do I need to adi\just the cable some to get more
through out bears engagement? any ideas or extremities, she old and
un-restored ( 64 700 sedan ) but in great shape.
Thanks

Reverse is non-synchro. The forward gears are all syncho When the clutch is
first depressed the relatively heavy clutch disk is still spinning.
With the car at a dead stop, and holding the clutch all the way down, I
either have to wait several seconds for the disk to stop by itself before
engaging reverse, or engage one of the forward gears to use its synchro to
stop the clutch disk, then go for reverse.

If reverse grinds coming from 1/2/3/4 it suggests the clutch disk is
dragging, either due to poor adjustment, or some physical malady like being
slightly bent, or the splines are rusty and sticky.
