spent yesterday chasing down this problem with lots of "one thing at at
time" trouble-shooting, so here's a "weekend update"...

the good news...
the car is once again running!!!!! big props to vintage corsa member dave
thompson for helping me get to this point over the phone...however....

the bad news...
1) trouble-shooting has isolated a problem with negative wire
(brown/white) to the coil. for some reason, it is now acting as a "kill"
wire...ie, the car starts/runs only when this wire is disconnected. also,
the chassis manual wiring diagram shows this wire is tied to the tach
(corsa dash), so tach is not working...
2) "gen" light is on, and the battery does not show any increase in voltage
when engine is running (i'm told V at battery should be closer to 15V while
running as part of the normal charging process). i swapped out a fresh
alternator thinking this could be an internal voltage regulator issue, but
showed no change.

at this point, original flamethrower II coil and pertronix e-points are
both re-installed, i replaced 2 blown fuses under the dash, replacement
e-fuel pump is pumping, coil ground wire is disconnected, engine runs, gen
light is on, tach is dead, and battery shows 12V whether ignition is on or
off...

so...
- how is coil operating w/o a ground connection? and why is standard coil
ground wire killing the engine?
- why is gen light on, and is it related to the above grounding wire? btw,
i don't know if gen light would go off if i connected this wire because
engine would die.
- see above...same issue w/ tach.

any suggestions on next phase of trouble-shooting?

thx all, and especially you dave!
