Jim - With at least some respect for some of the comments you have 
already gotten,  as you are new to Corvairs this is a subject where you 
will get a lot of replies - many that range from the questionable to the 
downright absurd.

If you have a mechanical pump install it and watch for leaks over the 
first couple of hundred miles. Do not make the assumption as to it's 
advance suitability by any superficial identifications.

Yes, you should carry a spare pump, at least on long trips. Not because 
a good mechanical pump is unreliable, but because if you ever need one 
you will not find one locally should you ever have a rare failure.  You 
should also carry a spare fan belt and other items as well for the same 
reasons.
