 At the end of the day, getting the fan closer to the shroud makes it more efficient, but the improvement isn't significant enough to be worth messing with. It's akin to putting lipstick on a pig! Not to start an off topic discussion here...

I just make a shim for under the fan  mounting flange...so simple!
