Ned, I haven't tried one myself, but Dakota Digital, (dakotadigital.com)
makes a unit for cable driven cars.  It includes an adapter for the GM style
speedometer.  It connects between the speedo and the incoming cable.  I
don't know why it wouldn't work on a Corvair.  I am considering installing
this unit eventually.
