The catch is heavy enough that the normal bouncing of the car will not jar
it loose? How about on a rough road? Springs are there to keep the catch in
place even under adverse conditions. I've never seen a secondary hood catch
rely only on gravity.

My safety catch drops in via gravity, no spring to get rusty.
